An artist should question the world around him; jeff obafemi carr knows that.
He doesn’t presume to have the answers; he spells his name without capitalization as a personal reminder about humility. His quest for knowledge about himself, humankind and the world even led to a July trip to Egypt that carr called “a revelatory experience.”
That’s why the title of carr’s one-man show is a question: How Blak Kin Eye Bee? He’s performed the piece many times across America since he first did it at Fisk University in 2001. Thursday’s show at the Belcourt Theatre, however, will be the first time he has done his seven-character, 90-minute show in Nashville since two critically acclaimed sold-out performances at the Ryman Auditorium in 2003.
