Fisk University celebrated the new academic year as it welcomed the class of 2012 and recognized its honors students during Opening Convocation 2008 held in Fisk Memorial Chapel.
Fisk alumna Dr. Lonnetta Taylor Gaines urged the class of 2012 to pursue the values of the University and stressed the importance of academic excellence during her convocation address titled “Meeting Challenges, Building Character and Making the Grade.” As an educator, dancer and advocate of the arts, Dr. Gaines is also the author of three books. Dr. Gaines’ children’s novel “Fia and the Butterfly” from 2005 has been produced also as a children’s CD.
In addition to welcoming the class of 2012, Fisk President Hazel R. O’Leary welcomed Dr. Gwendolyn Brown-Felder as the Chaplin of Fisk Memorial Chapel and read the oath of office to 2008-2009 SGA President Vincent Stokes.
Fisk’s faculty, staff and students congratulated the 14 presidential and 78 provost scholars from spring semester 2008. Presidential Scholars have completed 16 or more credit hours and have a 4.0 semester average. Provost Scholars have completed 16 or more credit hours and have earned a 3.5 average for the semester.
